What on earth do I pack in my hospital bag?!

Published by Selina Cotton on

Being pregnant can be really daunting at times, especially if it’s your first. It just feels like the closer you get to your due date, the more stuff you should be doing to prepare.

I have created a hospital bag checklist to help you out just a little. I have made a downloadable link for you too, so you can add your own bits and make it more personal to you.

What you’ll need to pack for you

• Medical notes and birth plan (if you have one).
• Toothpaste and toothbrush
• Maternity pads
• Disposable maternity briefs
• Deodorant
• Shampoo
• Shower gel
• Lip balm or salve – your lips can get dry using gas and air (if you do)
• Something to read
• Hairbrush
• Face flannel
• Nightie or T-shirt for labour – nothing expensive, it quite possibly won’t be worn again
• Hair clips or scrunchies
• Energy snacks and treats – pack a straw too, so that your birthing partner can hold the drink for you during contractions

Non-essentials, but nice to have

• Your own pillow
• Face spray or room mist
• iPod with relaxing music
• Headphones
• Makeup and cosmetics
• Eye mask
• Ear plugs
• Favourite teabags

What you’ll need to pack for baby

• Change bag
• 3 baby vests (newborn/0-3 months), preferably cotton
• 3 sleepsuits (newborn/0-3 months)
• Soft baby hat, newborn size
• Pair of scratch mitts
• Baby blanket
• Bibs
• Baby towel
• Coming home outfit (warm clothes if cold)
• Cotton wool balls or pads
• Newborn-size nappies
• Nappy sacks
• Muslin squares
• Breast pads
• Breastfeeding pillow (if you’re planning on breastfeeding)
• Nipple cream
• Maternity bra
• formula and bottles if you’re not going to breastfeed

Must-haves for your partner

• Lightweight, comfortable clothes
• Change for car park and snacks/drinks
• Energy snacks
• Bottled water
• Wash bag
• Camera and phone charger
• List of people to contact with your baby news
Car seat – DO NOT FORGET THIS, YOU CAN’T TAKE BABY HOME WITHOUT IT

I hope this has helped, please do use it 🙂
